Peter Barraud (Stoke Park Wood Forestry Warden)

Peter Barraud 1918-1994

Stoke Park woods have lost their friendly face and Bishopstoke has lost a character, known to every dog walker and forestry lover. Peter Barraud, warden of Stoke Park woods, who had worked for the Forestry Commission since 1946 passed away on Thursday June the 30th 1994. Peter was born in May 1918, he worked in Ampfield and Stoke Park woods as a forestry craftsman since 1963, he retired in 1985 but continued to work for the Commission as warden to Stoke Park. Even in retirement his love for the woods, would see him out in all weathers, everyday greeting visitors. Many would laugh, that they never stepped a foot in there, without Peter leaping out to greet them. Mr Barraud help set up the Guardians of Stoke Park woods and together they organise the fantastic Halloween evenings, as well as countless guided walks for local residents. Lots more events are planned for this beautiful community woodland but Mr Barnard will be missed by all. Eastleigh weekly 11/7/84
